The Journey of a Thousand Miles....

...Begins With the First Step!

Welcome to my first blog post!

I hope this monthly blog will give you some insights into my photography and the processes behind it. Although I cannot promise any great insights and philosophies into photography and art making, I hope this will give readers a little “backstage pass” into the photos I make. Hope you enjoy!

Photography legend Imogen Cunningham has a quote that goes something like this: “Which one of my photographs is my favorite? The one I’m going to take tomorrow.” I would like to offer a slight variation of this quote, as what is true for me is that my favorite photo tends to be one I just took. So this blog will be about just that – my favorite photo of the moment …and whatever else is going on in my photo world. As with any artistic endeavor, I have my ups and downs – times when I am feeling inspired and times when I feel stuck. I am hoping that with this blog, I can share what brings me joy about this artistic path (as there is so much joy in it!) through the photos that capture my attention, whether they are “marketable” or not.

So onto this month’s image: Although this image was taken a few months ago, it is still one of my favorites - so much so that I ended up using it as the image for my new business cards. I chose it as it has all the elements I love about my photography – there is a play between realism and abstraction; there is a sense of movement to it; it’s imperfect (Sharp focus? No! Well exposed? No!); it is a monochrome image (which is the type of image I love the most); and well, it’s of a flower, an object of great beauty that holds so much symbolism for so many. In a sense, this image is a self-portrait –somehow grounded, but at the same time, solitary in its space. This image may seem very dark (symbolically) but for me, it represents the peace one finds only in dreaming and flying, and in that freedom, it is very joyful.

But however much I love this image, I am unable to come up with a suitable title for it. Any ideas out there?

Thanks for reading…and I’ll catch ya next month!

Hi Marianne! I enjoyed reading your blog and am proud to call you friend. You're a true artist and I think your photo is lovely. As for a title I submit the following suggestion: Fleeting Beauty. The areas that are soft and out of focus suggest change to me, which in relation to the petals that are in focus, makes me think of how flowers are in their prime for only a short period of time. Hope this is useful.
